The World Heavyweight Championship is a professional wrestling world heavyweight championship in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The championship shares a name with the previous World Heavyweight Championship promoted from 2002 to 2013, however, they do not share a lineage.
History[]
On the April 24, 2023 episode of Raw, Triple H unveiled the new World Heavyweight Championship, announcing that the title would be defended on the brand that did not select WWE and Universal Champion Roman Reigns in the 2023 WWE draft. It was also revealed that the first champion would be crowned at Night of Champions on May 27. On the April 28 episode of SmackDown, Reigns was drafted to SmackDown, making the World Heavyweight Championship exclusive to Raw.
First round and semifinal matches of a tournament to crown an inaugural champion took place on the May 8 episode of Raw and the May 12 episode of SmackDown. At Night of Champions, Seth Rollins met AJ Styles in the final, with Rollins defeating Styles to become the inaugural champion.
