Royal Rumble 2024

Royal Rumble 2024 was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event and WWE Network event produced by WWE for the Raw, SmackDown and NXT brands. It took place on January 27, 2024 at Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay, Florida. It was the thirty-seventh event under the Royal Rumble chronology.

Production

Background

First held in 1988, the Royal Rumble is one of WWE's biggest annual events, a part of the "Big Five" alongside WrestleMania, Money in the Bank, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series. Each Royal Rumble event features the Royal Rumble match, a battle royal in which thirty competitors enter the fray at timed intervals. Participants are eliminated when they are thrown over the top rope and both feet touch the floor. A Royal Rumble match is held for both the male and female rosters, with the winner selecting a world championship of their choosing to challenge for at WrestleMania 40.

Storylines

At Crown Jewel on November 4, 2023, Logan Paul defeated Rey Mysterio to win the United States Championship. On the December 1 episode of SmackDown, Paul announced that eight competitors would compete in a tournament to determine his first challenger. The tournament concluded on the January 5, 2024, episode of SmackDown, with Kevin Owens defeating Santos Escobar in the final. Thanks to his victory, Owens earned a championship match with Paul at the Royal Rumble.

Before suffering a back injury and going on hiatus in May 2022, Randy Orton had been embroiled in a feud with The Bloodline. At Crown Jewel on November 4, 2023, Roman Reigns retained the WWE and Universal Championships against LA Knight thanks to interference from The Bloodline. On the November 10 episode of SmackDown, Knight declared that he was not finished with Reigns. At Survivor Series on November 25, Orton made his return, competing in the Men's WarGames Match. On the December 1 episode of SmackDown, Orton signed with the brand after fighting off The Bloodline. Two weeks later, AJ Styles made his return by assisting Orton and Knight in fending off The Bloodline, however, Styles would attack Knight soon after. Styles would reveal the following week that he had attacked Knight because he had taken his place in a tag team match at Fastlane two months prior. Orton would interrupt, making it clear that he also wanted a match with Reigns. Consequentially, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis announced that Orton, Styles, and Knight would face off in a Triple Threat Match to determine who would challenge Reigns at the Royal Rumble. The match took place on the January 5, 2024, episode of SmackDown, but ended without a winner due to The Bloodline attacking all three men. After, Aldis announced that Reigns would defend his title against Orton, Knight, and Styles in a Fatal Four Way Match at the Royal Rumble.
