Background[]

Beginning in 2002, Ring of Honor (ROH) has held Final Battle annually, with the show becoming regarded as ROH's flagship event. On October 18, 2022, it was announced that the twenty-first Final Battle event would take place at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas on December 10, the same day as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) event NXT Deadline.

Storylines[]

On the December 2, 2022 episode of Rampage, while being interviewed by Renee Paquette, Keith Lee was interrupted by his former ROH tag team partner Shane Taylor. Taylor challenged Lee to a tag team match at Final Battle, stating he would team with JD Griffey. After Taylor left, Swerve Strickland, Lee's AEW tag team partner, appeared and began smiling. It was later confirmed that Lee and Strickland would face Taylor and Griffey at Final Battle.

Following her victory over Madison Rayne on the November 18, 2022 episode of Rampage, Athena, who had began showing a mean streak, continued to attack Rayne, knocking down referee Aubrey Edwards in the process. However, ROH Women's World Champion Mercedes Martinez intervened, stopping the attack. The following week, Athena laid out a challenge to Martinez for Final Battle. On December 1, it was confirmed that Martinez would defend her championship against Athena at Final Battle.

On the December 2, 2022 episode of Rampage, Juice Robinson appeared in a vignette, challenging ROH World Television Champion Samoa Joe to a match at Final Battle. It was later confirmed that Robinson would challenge Joe at Final Battle.

At Death Before Dishonor, Wheeler Yuta retained the ROH Pure Championship against Daniel Garcia. However, in a rematch on the September 7 episode of Dynamite, Garcia defeated Yuta to win the championship. In a sit-down interview on the November 30 episode of Dynamite, Yuta challenged Garcia to a championship match at Final Battle, which Garcia accepted.

At Supercard of Honor, FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) won the ROH World Tag Team Championship after defeating The Briscoes (Jay Briscoe and Mark Briscoe). FTR and The Briscoes would have a Two Out Of Three Falls rematch at Death Before Dishonor, with FTR once again emerging victorious. On the December 7, 2022 episode of Dynamite, following FTR's match with The Acclaimed, Austin and Colten Gunn appeared on the titantron. The Gunn brothers produced a Christmas card, which contained a challenge from The Briscoes to FTR, written in blood. Austin and Colten then revealed a pair of dog collars, revealing that The Briscoes would face FTR in a Double Dog Collar Match at Final Battle.

On the September 21, 2022 episode of Dynamite, Chris Jericho won the ROH World Championship from Claudio Castagnoli following a low blow. In the following weeks, Jericho promised to destroy Ring of Honor, along with defeating multiple former Ring of Honor champions. On the November 25 episode of Rampage, Castagnoli interrupted Jericho and his stable, The Jericho Appreciation Society. Castagnoli challenged Jericho to a rematch but Jericho denied him. However, after consulting with stablemate Matt Menard, Jericho agreed to give Claudio a rematch at Final Battle, with the stipulation that if Castagnoli loses, he must join The Jericho Appreciation Society.
