The NXT Tag Team Championship is a professional wrestling tag team championship owned by WWE and is competed for exclusively in NXT Wrestling, WWE's developmental territory. The championship is generally contested in professional wrestling matches, in which participants execute worked finishes. Introduced on January 23, 2013, the inaugural champions were the British Ambition (Adrian Neville and Oliver Grey).
History
The championship was introduced on the January 23, 2013, episode of NXT where it was announced by special guest Shawn Michaels that there would be a tournament to crown the inaugural champions.
On the January 31, 2013, the British Ambition (Adrian Neville and Oliver Grey) defeated The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper and Erick Rowan) to become the inaugural champions. However, in the first defense of the title, Neville and Bo Dallas defended the NXT Tag Team title against the Wyatt Family due Grey being injured, where they lost. Dallas is not recognized as champion. On June 20, Neville and Corey Graves defeated The Wyatt Family for the titles, making Neville the first person to hold the title on more than one occasion. On June 8, 2016, The Revival (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder) became the first team to hold the championship on more than one occasion when they defeated American Alpha (Chad Gable and Jason Jordan) at NXT TakeOver: The End.
Reigns
As of April 19, 2024, there have been nine different championship teams, and 17 individual champions with the team of The Revival (Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder) holding the most reigns at two. Individually, Adrian Neville, Dawson, and Wilder have the most reigns, also at two. The inaugural champions were the British Ambition (Adrian Neville and Oliver Grey). The team with the longest reign is The Ascension (Conor O'Brian/Konnor and Rick Victor/Viktor) at 364 days (WWE recognizes it as 344 days, but still the longest), while the shortest reign is The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper and Erick Rowan) at 49 days. However, due to tape delays, which are the dates that WWE recognizes for the NXT Tag Team Championship's title history, they recognize The Wyatt Family's reign as 70 days, with American Alpha (Chad Gable and Jason Jordan) having the shortest reign at 68 days. Rezar holds the record as the youngest champion at 22, while the oldest is Bobby Fish at 38.
The current champions are Bobby Fish & Kyle O'Reilly. They defeated Sanity members Eric Young and Killian Dain on November 29, 2017.
