The NXT North American Championship is a professional wrestling championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE for their developmental brand NXT. It was introduced at the NXT tapings on March 7, 2018. The inaugural champion was determined in a ladder match at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans on April 7, 2018.
The championship was first introduced at the March 7, 2018, tapings of NXT when NXT general manager William Regal announced a ladder match at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans for the inaugural championship. Later that night, EC3, Killian Dain, Adam Cole, Ricochet, Lars Sullivan, and Velveteen Dream were announced as the participants in the match. Adam Cole was victorious to become the inaugural NXT North American Champion.
In July 2020, then-champion Keith Lee announced that he would be voluntarily relinquishing the championship to focus on defending his NXT Championship and to give others a chance to earn the title he vacated. A set of triple threat matches were announced by William Regal for a chance to qualify for the ladder match for the vacant NXT North American Championship at NXT TakeOver XXX. Bronson Reed, Dexter Lumis, Damian Priest and Cameron Grimes won their matches against Roderick Strong, Johnny Gargano, Finn Bálor, Timothy Thatcher, Oney Lorcan, Ridge Holland, Kushida, and the returning Velveteen Dream. Dream returned from a hiatus following a supposed injury after running a red light, though it was actually due to sexual misconduct allegations. Dexter Lumis suffered a leg injury during his qualifier match, so Regal made an announcement that 2 new one-on-one qualifier matches will be set up for those who weren't pinned or submitted in their repsectful qualifiers. From there, Johnny Gargano defeated Ridge Holland and Velveteen Dream defeated Finn Bálor to insert themselves into the ladder match. At TakeOver, Damian Priest would win the championship and went on to celebrate in a hot tub. Priest would lose the title to Johnny Gargano in a Devil's Playground Match at NXT Halloween Havoc.
The inaugural champion was Adam Cole. The oldest champion is Damian Priest, winning the title at 37 years old, while the youngest champion is Velveteen Dream, winning the title at 23 years old. Dream also has the longest reign at 231 days (209 days as recognized by WWE). Johnny Gargano holds the most reigns at three, as well as holding the shortest reign at 3 days (tied with Leon Ruff at 25 days as recognized by WWE).
