NXT New Year's Evil 2023 was a special episode of World Wrestling Entertainment's NXT television series that took place on January 10, 2023 at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. It was the third New Year's Evil event under the WWE banner.
Production[]
Background[]
The New Year's Evil name was first used for the December 27, 1999 of WCW Monday Nitro. In 2001, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) would purchase World Championship Wrestling (WCW). WWE would revive New Year's Evil in 2021 as a special episode of their NXT television program. At NXT Deadline on December 10, 2022, NXT announced that the third New Year's Evil event under the WWE banner would take place on January 10, 2023, at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.
Storylines[]
On the January 3, 2023 episode of NXT, Toxic Attraction (Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne) announced that they would be setting their sights on NXT Women's Champion Roxanne Perez. However, this would begin a chain reaction of interruptions from other members of the women's roster, resulting in a brawl breaking out. The brawl was interrupted by Perez, who announced a Twenty Woman Battle Royal for New Year's Evil, with the winner becoming the new number one contender.
On the December 27, 2022 episode of NXT, Drew Gulak agreed to teach Hank Walker a lesson in wrestling. Gulak would briefly demonstrate grappling and submitting two competitors while Walker watched, insisting that when an opponent submits, one must release the hold immediately. The final competitor, Myles Borne, gave Gulak more resistance than he expected. As a result, Gulak would not release his submission hold after Borne tapped out, resulting in Walker separating the two. This brought out Charlie Dempsey, setting up a match between him and Walker. However, the following week, Dempsey was unable to compete as a result of not being medically cleared. Later that night, while Gulak was celebrating his victory over Andre Chase, Dempsey revealed he would face Walker at New Year's Evil.
At NXT Deadline, Pretty Deadly (Elton Prince and Kit Wilson) lost the NXT Tag Team Championship to The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods). On the December 20, 2022 episode of NXT, The New Day agreed to give Pretty Deadly a rematch if they could find all the WWE memorabilia they requested. Two weeks later, Pretty Deadly informed The New Day that they couldn't find the last item. Instead, Wilson declared that he wanted himself and Prince to compete in a Gauntlet Match against three other teams at New Year's Evil.
On the December 27, 2022 episode of NXT, Tony D'Angelo faced North American Champion Wes Lee. However, D'Angelo would lose the match following a distraction from Dijak. As a result, it was announced the following week that D'Angelo would face Dijak at New Year's Evil.
On the October 25, 2022 episode of NXT, Indus Sher (Sanga and Veer Mahaan) attacked The Creed Brothers (Brutus Creed and Julius Creed). However, the two teams would not face off due to an injury to Brutus. On the December 27 episode of NXT, following Julius' win over JD McDonagh, Indus Sher confronted The Creed Brothers, challenging them to a match at New Year's Evil, which was accepted.
At NXT Deadline, Grayson Waller won the inaugural Men's Iron Survivor Challenge, becoming the number one contender for the NXT Championship. Later that night, NXT Champion Bron Breakker defeated Apollo Crews to retain the title. Following the match, Waller would attack Breakker. As a result, Waller was scheduled to challenge Breakker for the NXT Championship at New Year's Evil.
