NXT Heat Wave 2022

NXT Heat Wave 2022 was a special episode of World Wrestling Entertainment's NXT television series that took place on August 16, 2022 at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. The event was the eighth overall Heat Wave and the inaugural Heat Wave produced under the WWE banner.

Background[]

The Heat Wave event originated in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), where it was promoted as an annual event. Following World Wrestling Entertainment's purchase of ECW on January 28, 2003, the event was left dormant. On the July 26, 2022 episode of NXT, it was announced that NXT Heat Wave would take place on August 16, 2022, reviving the event.

Storylines[]

A week after winning the NXT Women's Tag Team Championship with Cora Jade at the Great American Bash, Roxanne Perez cashed in her Women's Breakout Tournament victory to face NXT Women's Champion Mandy Rose. Jade would cost Perez the championship match before attacking Perez with her skateboard. The following week, Jade explained that her friendship with Perez was over before throwing her Women's Tag Team Championship belt into a bin. On the August 9, 2022 episode of NXT, Perez prevented Jade from winning her match with Zoey Stark before Perez chased Jade to the back with a kendo stick. A match between Perez and Jade was made official for Heat Wave that night.

On the August 2, 2022 episode of NXT, NXT North American Champion Carmelo Hayes issued an open challenge, which Giovanni Vinci looked set to accept, however, Nathan Frazer sprinted down to the ring to take the match. However, Frazer would be unsuccessful in winning the championship after Vinci pushed him off the top rope. The following week, Vinci requested that Hayes reopen the challenge, a request Hayes accepted, making a match between them official for Heat Wave.

After Legado Del Fantasma was forced to take orders from Tony D'Angelo after losing a six man tag team match at In Your House, D'Angelo revealed at The Great American Bash that Santos Escobar had been put in hospital after Escobar prank called him the week prior. Escobar returned on the August 2, 2022 episode of NXT, punching D'Angelo with brass knuckles in order to prevent D'Angelo and Channing Lorenzo from winning the NXT Tag Team Championship. The following week, D'Angelo and Escobar agreed to face off in a Street Fight at Heat Wave, with the stipulation that if Escobar wins, Legado Del Fantasma will be free, while if D'Angelo wins, Escobar will be barred from NXT.

On the July 19, 2022 episode of NXT, a twenty-woman battle royal took place to determine the next challenger to NXT Women's Champion Mandy Rose. Zoey Stark, returning from injury, won the match after eliminating Cora Jade, making a match between Stark and Rose official for Heat Wave.

Following his victory over Cameron Grimes at NXT: The Great American Bash 2022, NXT Champion Bron Breakker was attacked and put through a table by JD McDonagh. On the August 2, 2022 episode of NXT, a contract signing took place between Breakker and McDonagh, which saw McDonagh sign the contract with his blood, making the match official for Heat Wave.
