NXT: The Great American Bash 2023 was a professional wrestling event produced by WWE for their NXT brand. The event took place on July 30, 2023 at the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park, Texas. The event was broadcast on Peacock in the United States and on the WWE Network internationally.
Production
Background
The Great American Bash event was first held in 1985 by Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP). After World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) bought World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 2001, WWE revived the event as an annual pay-per-view in 2004, which was discontinued after 2009. In 2012, the event was briefly revived as a special episode of SmackDown. The event was once again revived in 2020, returning as an annual special episode of NXT. During Battleground on May 28, 2023, it was announced that the Great American Bash would be a livestreaming event taking place on July 30 at the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park, Texas.
Storylines
On the July 25 episode of NXT, Gable Steveson was set to reveal whether he would stay in NXT. However, before he could, he was confronted by Baron Corbin. Steveson would choose to stay in NXT, challenging Corbin to a match at The Great American Bash, which was made official.
On the June 6 episode of NXT, during a battle royal to determine the number one contender for the NXT Women's Championship, Blair Davenport appeared at ringside, calling out Roxanne Perez. Davenport and Perez would brawl at ringside before Perez was eliminated. The following week, Perez called out Davenport. On the July 4 episode of NXT, Perez was defeated by Davenport. On the July 18 episode of NXT, during a split-screen interview, Davenport and Perez agreed to face off in a rematch at The Great American Bash.
On Week 1 of Gold Rush, Wes Lee retained the North American Championship against Tyler Bate in a match with Mustafa Ali as guest referee. The following week, Lee and Bate questioned Ali's refereeing. The next week, Ali defeated Bate. After, Ali challenged Lee to a title match at The Great American Bash, which was later made official. However, on the July 18 episode of NXT, Lee lost his North American Championship to Dominik Mysterio following interference from Mysterio's Judgment Day stablemates. As a result, it was announced that a Triple Threat Match between Mysterio, Lee, and Ali would take place at The Great American Bash.
On Week 2 of Gold Rush, Tiffany Stratton defended the NXT Women's Championship against Thea Hail. At the conclusion of the match, Hail had Stratton locked in the Kimura Lock, however, due to a distraction from Charlie Dempsey and Drew Gulak, the referee did not see Stratton tap out, allowing Stratton to get the win. On the July 18 episode of NXT, Hail announced she wanted a rematch with Stratton in a submission match. Stratton declined before Hail once again put her in the Kimura Lock. As a result, Stratton accepted the stipulation.
Over the course of several weeks, a series of vignettes showcased Tony D'Angelo being arrested with Channing Lorenzo attempting to free him, all while trying to fend off Gallus (Joe Coffey, Mark Coffey, and Wolfgang). On the July 11 episode of NXT, Lorenzo beat Joe in order to free D'Angelo. The following week, during a celebration of D'Angelo's freedom, D'Angelo and Lorenzo challenged Gallus to an NXT Tag Team Championship match at The Great American Bash, which was accepted.
During the conclusion of Week 2 of Gold Rush, Bron Breakker would go into a rage in Shawn Michaels' office, declaring that he had done everything in NXT before stating that Michaels couldn't control him. On the July 4 episode of NXT, Breakker talked about his loss to World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins. However, he would be interrupted by Ilja Dragunov, who stated that Breakker was standing between him and the NXT Championship. A brawl would then break out between the two. The following week, Dragunov defeated Breakker, earning a match against NXT Champion Carmelo Hayes at The Great American Bash.
