Prior to that bout, the dream match between The Phenomenal One and Nakamura at WrestleMania was tainted by The King of Strong Style's post-match assault after Styles retained the WWE Championship, and their rematch at the Greatest Royal Rumble event in Saudi Arabia was left unresolved by a double count-out.
Just when it looked as if the stakes couldn't get any higher, a non-title victory by Nakamura over Styles on SmackDown LIVE allowed him to pick the stipulation for their imminent pay-per-view showdown.
