Max Edmund Palmer (November 27, 1927 – May 17, 1984) was an American actor and professional wrestler. Known for his great height, in 2014 he was described as the second tallest professional wrestler in history.

Career[]

Max Palmer was born in a small town in Mississippi. He had three siblings. Due to his size, he played in various films and series, including "Invaders from Mars" and "Killer Ape" together with Johnny Weissmüller . He has also been invited to various shows such as "Dean Martin / Jerry Lewis Comedy Hour", or "The Jimmy Durante Show".

After his short acting career 1952-1954 he began as a professional wrestler in Salt Lake City, Utah. He competed under the wrestling name Paul Bunyan, who was based on on the legendary giant woodcutter. He was billed by the ring announcer as being up to eight feet tall and weighing 500 pounds. However, his real height was 2.31 m and his real weight was also lower according to other records. His wrestling career ended due to a drug and alcohol problem.

In 1963 he became a Protestant minister and preached until his death, in 1984 due to heart failure.

He married Betty Palmer in 1975 and then adopted former Major League Baseball player Jim Palmer.
