A ladder match is a wrestling match type where two or more opponents attempt to get something from the top of the ring, and a ladder is used to get it. Although the ladder is meant to be used to get the object above the ring, it's more commonly used as a weapon.
+
A ladder match is a professional wrestling match type where two or more opponents (or teams) compete in an attempt to be the first to retrieve an object suspended above the ring. Since the object is suspended beyond jumping height, ladders are provided by the promotion hosting the match. Ladders will typically be used to retrieve the object, as well as be used as weapons and as setups for spectacular bumps.
  +
  +
The object suspended above the ring will vary according to the story line of the match. Most common objects include championship belts or briefcases. The match typically ends once a wrestler retrieves the objects and returns to the canvas, but some iterations of the match involve having to then using the object in some manner (unlocking a cage, using against an opponent, etc.)
  +
  +
The first ladder matches took place in 1972 in Stampede Wrestling where booker Dan Kroffat is credited as originating the idea.

Laddermatch

A ladder match is a professional wrestling match type where two or more opponents (or teams) compete in an attempt to be the first to retrieve an object suspended above the ring. Since the object is suspended beyond jumping height, ladders are provided by the promotion hosting the match. Ladders will typically be used to retrieve the object, as well as be used as weapons and as setups for spectacular bumps.

The first ladder matches took place in 1972 in Stampede Wrestling where booker Dan Kroffat is credited as originating the idea.
