Damian Shovelton (August 15, 1985) is an English professional wrestler best known by his ring name Joey Hayes.
Professional wrestling career[]
Shovelton was trained Darren Poole & Lee Butler and made his debut sometime during 2001. Between 2003 and 2006, Shovelton wrestled numerous matches for Grand Pro Wrestling (GPW) and Frontier Wrestling Alliance (FWA) along with work in other promotions during those years.
Frontier Wrestling Alliance (2004-2010)[]
Hayes made his FWA debut on April 10, 2004 at FWA Unsigned, where he lost a match to Damon Leigh. Hayes returned to FWA on June 26 during its Morecambe, Lancashire show in a match won by former WWE star Burchill. He returned for FWA's next Morecambe show where he won his first FWA victory, defeating Declan O'Connor. On July 10, 2005 at FWA Vendetta, Hayes competed in a Ten-Man Battle Royal to determine the next Number One Contender for the XWA British Heavyweight Championship. The next year on July 15, 2006 at FWA Summer Classic, Hayes joined forces with Declan O'Connor as a tag team named The Manchester Massive to compete in a Three-Way Best Two Out Of Three Match Series won by team UK Pitbulls (Big Dave & Bulk). On November 19, Hayes entered a ten-man Gold Rush Qualifying Battle Royal won by Stevie Knight. Although he did not win the match qualifier, Hayes still entered the FWA Gold Rush Rumble held on February 3, 2007 but was one of twelve competitors who were defeated by rumble winner Jonny Storm. He also had a tag match, teaming with Declan O'Connor to defeat Andy Simmonz & Ross Jordan.
Two years later, Hayes returned to FWA on August 2, 2009 at New Frontiers where and CJ Banks lost a tag match to The Leaders Of The New School (Marty Scurll & Zack Sabre, Jr.). On October 3 at FWA Carpe Diem, Hayes and CJ Banks debuted as team Northern Xposure in a tag rematch defeating The Leaders Of The New School. At FWA Hotwired, Hayes lost to Zack Sabre, Jr. in a singles match. On February 13, 2010 at FWA British Uproar Team Northern Xposure once more defeated defeat The Leaders Of The New School in a rematch. By June 26 at FWA The Art Of War, Hayes wrestled his final FWA match, teaming with CJ Banks to compete in the Tournament for the FWA Tag Team Championship, advancing in the first round after eliminating team Retro Pop (Dave Rayne & Sam Bailey).
Grand Pro Wrestling (2003-present)[]
Hayes debuted on July 25, 2003 at GPW Defection in a match won by Sabotage. On August 24, Hayes won his first GPW Battle Royal at GPW Second Coming. He also won his first GPW singles victory, defeating Lee Butler at Second Coming. On November 2, at GPW Nemesis, Hayes competed in his first tables match teaming with Damon Leigh to defeat Heresy & Lee Butler. At GPW Hostile Takeover, Hayes held GPW British Championship in a title match lost to Damon Leigh. He later entered a Number One Contendership match for the British Championship at GPW Revelations but lost to JC Thunder. He returned the following year to wrestle five matches during the months of January, March, May, July and September. By November 2006, Hayes entered a Crazy Cruiser 8 2006 Tournament, advancing in the semifinals after eliminating Darkside. He advanced in the quarter final after eliminating Emil Sitoci, before he was defeated in the tournament final by Bubblegum.
On May 18, 2007, Hayes entered title hunts once more after winning a Number One Contendership match at GPW Only The Strong Survive, defeating Dave Rayne. Hayes went on to wrestle at GPW Collision Course where he won a three-way title match, defeating Heresy and the GPW British Champion Damon Leigh to win the GPW British Championship. At GPW Supercharged Hayes lost his first title defense to Heresy in a Winner Take All, Loser Leaves Town "I Quit" match. Returning on July 4, 2008, Hayes won a No Holds Barred match defeating TJ Cain. At GPW Back II School, Hayes teamed with Damon Leigh to challenge for the GPW Tag Team Championship but lost to the defending champions The MilAnfield Connection (Danny Hope & Jiggy Walker). On October 10 at GPW Only The Strong Survive, Hayes joined Team Bubblegum with Damon Leigh, Dylan Roberts, El Ligero, Simon Valour and captained by Bubblegum to win a 12-Man Elimination tag match defeating Team Feelgood (Danny Hope, Dirk Feelgood, Heresy, Jiggy Walker, The Juice & TJ Cain). He finished out 2008 with a victory on December 12 at GPW Christmas Crunch winning a handicap match defeating The MilAnfield Connection.
On January 16, Hayes returned at GPW Back With A Bang 2009 with Damon Leigh, where they won the GPW Tag Team Championship after defeating The MilAnfield Connection. At GPW Only The Strong Survive 2009, Hayes joined Team Bubblegum with Damon Leigh, Martin Kirby and team captain Bubblegum in an eight-man tag team elimination match won by Team Tasker (Heresy, Kastor LeVay, Keith Myatt & The Juggernaught). At GPW Heatwave, Hayes and Damon Leigh lost the GPW Tag Team Titles to team Paradise Lost (Heresy & Kastor LeVay). Hayes finished out the year by competing in the Crazy Cruiser 8 2009 Tournament where he advanced in the quarter finals after eliminating Ricky J. McKenzie. He then advanced in the semi final after eliminating Bubblegum. Hayes defeating CJ Banks in the tournament final to become the Crazy Cruiser 8 2009 Tournament winner. On March 19, 2010, Hayes challenged for the GPW British Championship at GPW Out For Justice but did not succeed in winning the title from CJ Banks. He met Banks in a title rematch at GPW Jam Hot! but was once more unsuccessful in winning the title. On May 21, Hayes entered a 30-Man Royal Rumble match to determine the new Number Contender for the GPW Heavyweight Championship but was won by Damon Leigh. Hayes went on to finish out 2010 wrestling in tag matches.
During 2011, Hayes mostly wrestled in tag matches, with his first and only title contendership match at GPW Heroes & Villains for a title shot at the GPW Heavyweight Championship but lost to Dirk Feelgood. On March 2, 2012 at GPW Northern Soul, Hayes wrestled for the Gallagher's Gold Title held by Jack Gallagher but did not succeed in winning the title. On October 5 at GPW Friday Night Thriller VI his next title match was for the GPW Heavyweight Title held by Martin Kirby but did not succeed in winning the championship. He met Kirby in a title rematch at GPW Fireworks but was again defeated. On December 7 at GPW Heroes & Villains 2, Hayes met Kirby in a three-way title match involving Cyanide, who actually defeated both Hayes the Heavyweight Champion Kirby to become the new GPW Heavyweight Champion. On January 25 at GPW Back With A Bang 2013, Hayes entered a Six-Way Money In The Bank match won by Damon Leigh. On November 29, Hayes entered the 2013 Crazy Cruiser 8 Tournament where he advanced in the quarter finals after eliminating with Jim Nastic. He was then eliminated in the semifinals by Zack Gibson.
During 2014 at GPW Only The Strong Survive, Hayes led team Track And Field (Ian Field, Jim Nastic & Mike Track) in a successful eight-man tag team elimination match defeating Martin Kirby, Noah & The Bad Lads (Drill & Micky Barnes). At the 2014 Thunderbrawl, Hayes entered a 30-Man Royal Rumble match won by Dirk Feelgood. On February 20, 2015 at Back With A Bang, he won a four-way number one contendership match after defeating Chris Ridgeway and Dylan Roberts and T-Bone. On May 15 at GPW Battlefield, Hayes' title match was held in a six-way format, wrestling against Bubblegum, CJ Banks, Cyanide, Nate Travis and the defending Heavyweight Champion Ricky J. McKenzie, however, Bubblegum emerged with the winner and new GPW Heavyweight Champion. At The Dom Travis Memorial Show he lost a title match to the GPW Heavyweight Champion Bubblegum.
On November 11, 2016 at GPW Who Dares Wins, Hayes wrestled in a four-way match for the GPW British Championship involving Chief Wahoo Thunderfoot, Micky Barnes and defending champion Jimmy Jackson. Neither Hayes nor the other two challengers succeeded in defeating Jackson for the title.
On March 24, 2017 at GPW Northern Soul 2, Hayes defeated Jimmy Jackson in a title rematch but only by disqualification, therefore not succeeding in winning the title. On March 24 at GPW Do Or Die Hayes wrestled in a three-way match for the GPW Heavyweight Championship Martin Kirby and defending champion Dylan Roberts. Neither Kirby or Hayes succeeded in winning the title.
On April 27, 2018 at GPW Battlefield V, Hayes challenged Sam Gradwell for the GPW British Championship but did not succeed in winning the title on this occasion.
Preston City Wrestling (2011-present)[]
Hayes made his debut on August 26, 2011 at PCW A New Beginning where he entered the PCW Heavyweight Championship Tournament, advancing in the first round after eliminating CJ Banks. He advanced to the semifinals held at PCW Road To Glory where he was eliminated by Noam Dar. On August 17, 2012 at PCW One But Not Forgotten - 1st Anniversary, Hayes wrestled Noam Dar, Bubblegum, Dean Allmark, Martin Kirby and Steven Walters in a six-way match for the PCW Cruiserweight Championship, but lost to Noam Dar. At PCW Last Night Of Freedom, Hayes was one of two challengers in Noam Dar's first title defense in a three-way match involving El Ligero, but neither Hayes nor Ligero succeeded in winning the title. On February 1, 2013, Hayes entered the PCW Road To Glory Tournament, advancing in the first round after eliminating former WWE cruiserweight superstar Paul London. On day two of the tournament during the semifinals, Hayes advanced after eliminating former WWE superstar Super Crazy. He was later eliminated in the tournament final by Noam Dar. During the first day of the 2013 PCW No Retreat, No Surrender show, Hayes competed in a four-way match to determine the new number one contender for the PCW Cruiserweight title. He wrestled against El Ligero, Kris Travis and Martin Kirby but it was Ligero that emerged the winner. On the third day of the event Hayes challenged former Impact Wrestling star Doug Williams for the PCW Heavyweight Championship but did not win the title. He wrestled in two Money In The Bank Ladder matches, with the first held on August 2, competiting against five other wrestlers including Kris Travis defeats Bubblegum and CJ Banks and Dean Allmark and Joey Hayes and Martin Kirby. Travis won the August 2 Money In The Bank match. Hayes's second Money In The Bank match was on October 31, defeating Kris Travis. On November 15 during the first day of the PCW SuperShow 3, Hayes wrestled in a four-way match against Kevin Steen, Dean Allmark and Kris Travis, losing to Steen.
On day three of PCW SuperShow 3, Hayes had the opportunity to wrestle and defeat former WWE superstar D'Lo Brown, winning by disqualification. On December 6 at PCW Festive Fury 3, Hayes finished out the year with a Hair vs. Hair match won by Kris Travis. Hayes returned on February 28, 2014 to enter the 2014 Road To Glory Tournament, advancing in the first round after eliminating Robbie X. During the quarterfinals held on March 1, Hayes was eliminated by former WWE superstar "The Masterpiece" Chris Masters. On March 28 at PCW Who Dares Wins Hayes entered a 30-Man Royal Rumble match to crown the new PCW Champion but lost to Danny Hope. He then however, won the title from Hope later during the event. At PCW SpringSlam, Hayes successfully defended the title against Hope in a rematch held with Lumberjack rules. During the first day of the PCW SuperShow 4 event, Hayes teamed with former WWE/Impact Wrestling superstar MVP in a tag match won by Danny Hope & Kris Travis. On the second day of the event, Hayes teamed with Team Single (Rampage Brown & T-Bone) to win a Four-On-Three handicap match defeating Danny Hope, Mad Man Manson and former WWE superstars Al Snow and Juventud Guerrera.During the third night of the PCW SuperShow 4 show, Hayes defeated Danny Hope in title rematch held under Best Two Out of Three Falls rules. At PCW I Want To Break Three, Hayes lost the title to Chris Master in a special referee title match. At PCW Tribute To The Troops, Hayes defeated former WWE superstar Carlito. Also at PCW Tribute To The Troops, he teamed with Bubblegum & Team Single (Rampage Brown & T-Bone) in a eight-man tag team match won by Carlito, Chris Masters, Dave Rayne & Dean Allmark.Two months later at PCW I Want To Break Three, Hayes lost the title to Chris Master in a special referee title match. On September 26 at PCW Just Get In The Bloody Ring he lost a Number One Contender match to Dave Mastiff. On October 31 at PCW Fright Night 3, Hayes lost to Uhaa Nation (later known in WWE as Apollo Crews).
On November 28 during day one of the PCW/ROH SuperShow Of Honor show, Hayes won a six-way match defeating ACH, Cedric Alexander, Charlie Garrett, Dean Allmark and El Ligero. On day two, Hayes defeated Ring of Honor star ACH. On the third day of the show, Hayes also defeated former WCW/WWE superstar Lance Storm. On March 13, Hayes returned to enter the 2015 Road To Glory Tournament only to be eliminated in the first round by Lionheart. During the second day of the PCW Road To Glory event, Hayes was defeated by Uhaa Nation. On the third day of the event Hayes wrestled in a six-way match won by Martin Kirby, involving Charlie Garrett, Christopher Daniels, Dean Allmark and Will Ospreay. On March 29 at PCW Who Dares Wins, Hayes entered a 30-Man Royal Rumble to determine the next contender for the PCW Championship but lost to Dave Mastiff. At PCW Tribute To The Troops 2, Hayes wrestled in a Six-Way Money In The Bank match won by Martin Kirby, involving Charlie Garrett, Dean Allmark, El Ligero and Lionheart. On October 31 at PCW Scary Moves In The Bloody Afternoon, Hayes formed a team with Martin Kirby to enter a Tag Team Gauntlet match to determine the number one contender for the PCW Championship. They competed against Ashton Smith & Charlie Garrett, Bram & Magnus and Dave Rayne and Lionheart & Noam Dar, but lost to the team of Smith & Garrett. On November 28 during Show #2 of the PCW/ROH SuperShow Of Honor #2 event, Hayes and Martin Kirby challenged for the PCW Tag Team Championship in a four-way tag match against reDRagon (Bobby Fish & Kyle O'Reilly) and War Machine (Hanson & Ray Rowe) but were all defeated by the defending tag champions Team Single (Rampage Brown & T-Bone). During the third show, Hayes challenged for the ROH World Championship but failed to win the title from the defending champion Jay Lethal.
Returning on February 5, Hayes entered the 2016 Road To Glory Tournament where he was eliminated in the first round by former WWE superstar Billy Gunn. On September 24 at PCW Dar Wars - The Final Chapter, Hayes and Martin Kirby won the PCW Tag Team Champion after defeating Team Single (Rampage Brown & T-Bone). On October 28 at PCW Fright Night V, Hayes and Kirby successfully retained their tag titles against CJ Banks & Danny Hope. On November 5 at PCW This Ain't Cosplay, Hayes entered a four-way match for the PCW Cruiserweight title against Bubblegum, Danny Hope and El Ligero. However, Bubblegum emerged the victor. On November 26, Hayes and Kirby retained the PCW Tag titles against Scarlet And Graves (Dezmond Xavier & Zachary Wentz). On December 10 during the second day of the PCW The Feed Me More Tour, Hayes wrestled and lost to former WWE/Impact Wrestling superstar James Storm. On February 25, Hayes wrestled at the 2017 Kris Travis Memorial Tournament where he was eliminated in the first round by Dean Allmark. Wrestling under the new team name Two Lads Pissing About, Hayes and Kirby wrestled in a three-way tag match won former WWE tag team superstars The Spirit Squad (Kenny & Mikey), involving The UK Hooligans (Roy Knight & Zak Knight).
On October 27 during PCW Fright Night 2017, team Three Mates Pissing About (Danny Hope, Joey Hayes & Martin Kirby) teamed with Matthew Brooks in a House Of Horrors tag match won by Big T. Justice, Dave Birch, Sheikh El Sham & Tel Banham. He finished out the year on December 16 at PCW Festive Fury 2017 teaming with Danny Hope in a tag match won by Big T. Justice & Tel Banham. Returning on February 10 Hayes with Danny Hope entered the 2018 PCW Road To Glory Tournament, where they were eliminated in the first round by Big T. Justice & Tel Banham. On April 8 at PCW Who Dares Wins, Hayes won the Who Dares Wins six-way match, defeating Ashton Smith, CJ Banks, Dave Birch, Iestyn Rees and Soner Dursun.
