Production[]
Background[]
In April 2022, Ric Flair, who hadn't wrestled a match since 2011, shared footage of him training with Jay Lethal. The following month, it was revealed that Flair would partake in a final match on July 31, 2022 at the Nashville Fairgrounds as part of an event dubbed Ric Flair's Last Match. However, after tickets sold out in 24 hours, the event was moved to the larger Nashville Municipal Auditorium, with additional tickets being put on sale.
Storylines[]
The story of Ric Flair's final match was told through a three part documentary web series titled Ric Flair: The Last Match. The first episode, which was broadcast on July 11, focused on Flair's career, life, his son, and his health issues. The second episode of the series saw Jeff Jarrett, Karen Jarrett, and Jay Lethal attack Flair in a parking lot following the event's press conference. After Flair was left bloodied while David Crockett looked on, it was revealed that Flair's son-in-law, Andrade El Idolo, would be teaming with him to take on Jarrett and Lethal. The final episode featured a contract signing between the two teams.
It was reported that the main event of the show was originally planned to feature Flair teaming with FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) to take on Ricky Steamboat and The Rock 'n' Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson), however, Steamboat revealed he had turned the match down. Matt Cardona revealed that he wanted to defend the NWA World Heavyweight Championship against Flair, however, he was unable to do so due to an injury that forced him to vacate the championship. Another injury affected the originally scheduled card after Clark Connors, who was set to face Ren Narita, was also injured. As a result, Connors was replaced by Yuya Uemura.
