Background[]

At Hard to Kill on January 13, 2023, Impact announced that the fifth Rebellion event would take place at the Rebel Entertainment Complex in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on April 16.

Storylines[]

On the April 6 episode of iMPACT!, in order to complete step seven in his initiation into The Design (Deaner, Kon, and Angels), Callihan was instructed to eliminate all authority from his life. Later, it was revealed that Santino Marella had been attacked backstage. Looking for revenge, Marella announced he would team up with Dirty Dango and Joe Hendry to take on The Design at Rebellion.

Since Hard to Kill on January 8, 2022, Honor No More, a stable of former Ring of Honor (ROH) competitors, invaded Impact Wrestling. Later, the group grew to include Eddie Edwards, who became its leader. However, following Honor No More's loss to the Impact Originals at Slammiversary on June 19, the cohesiveness of the faction began to diminish. Edwards would go on to blame member PCO for the shortcomings of Honor No More, calling his loyalty into question. After failing to win the Impact World Championship at Bound for Glory on October 7, Edwards would attempt to regroup with Honor No More on the October 20 episode of iMPACT!. However, Edwards' attitude towards PCO forced him to snap, as he attacked Edwards and the rest of Honor No More, disbanding the stable. On the November 3 episode of iMPACT!, Edwards buried PCO in the desert. At Hard to Kill on January 13, 2023, PCO returned, attacking Edwards after his match. On the March 9 episode of iMPACT!, Edwards and PCO met in the desert once again, however, PCO would be hit by a car as he gained the upper hand over Edwards. It was first presumed that Kenny King had been behind the wheel, as he had helped Edwards ambush PCO on the March 16 episode of iMPACT!. PCO would defeat King at Sacrifice on March 24, but it was revealed on the April 6 episode of iMPACT! that King was not the driver. Later that night, PCO faced Edwards in singles competition. However, PCO was defeated after Edwards' wife, Alisha Edwards, interfered, revealing she had been behind the wheel. Later, it was announced that PCO and Edwards would face off in a Last Rites Match at Rebellion.

At Sacrifice on March 24, Bully Ray and his former friend Tommy Dreamer squared off in a Busted Open Match. During the match, the referee would be knocked down before Dreamer made Ray bleed. With the referee down, Jason Hotch and John Skyler, allies of Ray, hit the ring, attacking Dreamer and cleaning up Ray's blood. Ray then busted open Dreamer as the referee returned, giving Ray the victory. After, Ray, Hotch, and Skyler continued attacking Dreamer, while also fighting off Yuya Uemura and National Hockey League legend Darren McCarty. This brought out Impact President Scott D'Amore, who was accompanied by Joe Hendry, Jonathan Gresham, Heath, Rhino, and Mike Bailey, to stop the attack. It was later announced that a Hardcore War Match would take place at Rebellion, with Ray and Dreamer both leading a team of five. On the April 6 episode of iMPACT!, Dreamer, Uemura, and Darren McCarty beat Ray, Hotch, and Skyler. After, a massive brawl broke out, which also involved Kenny King, Frankie Kazarian, Masha Slamovich, and Killer Kelly. It was announced that Ray's team would feature Hotch, Skyler, King, and Slamovich, while Dreamer's team included Uemura, Kazarian, Kelley, and Bhupinder Gujjar. On the April 13 episode of iMPACT!, King earned Ray's team the person advantage after defeating Frankie Kazarian with assistance from Brian Myers and Moose. Thanks to their aid, Myers and Moose replaced Hotch and Skyler on Ray's team.

On the March 16 episode of iMPACT!, The Coven (KiLynn King and Taylor Wilde) defeated The Death Dollz (Rosemary and Taya Valkyrie) to win the Knockouts Tag Team Championship. The following week, Death Dollz member JesSICKa looked to confront The Coven, only to find a casket backstage. Valkyrie would close the casket before she was dragged into it by a hand. It was later announced that JesSICKa and Rosemary would challenge The Coven for the Knockouts Tag Team Championship at Rebellion.

On the April 6 episode of iMPACT!, Mike Bailey faced off with Jonathan Gresham to determine who would challenge X Division Champion Trey Miguel at Rebellion. However, Miguel would interfere in the match, attacking both competitors, thus forcing a no contest. As a result, Santino Marella announced that Miguel would defend his title against Bailey and Gresham in a Three Way Elimination Match at Rebellion.

At No Surrender on February 24, BULLET CLUB (Ace Austin, Chris Bey, and KENTA) defeated KUSHIDA and Impact World Tag Team Champions The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin). Thanks to Austin pinning Sabin, him and Bey challenged The Motor City Machine Guns on the March 2 episode of iMPACT!, emerging victorious to win the Impact World Tag Team Championship. On the April 6 episode of iMPACT!, The Motor City Machine Guns challenged Austin and Bey to an Ultimate X Match for the championship, which was made official for Rebellion.

Originally scheduled to face Jordynne Grace at Sacrifice on March 24, Knockouts Champion Mickie James was unable to compete at the event due to an injury. During the show, James had an interview with Impact Director of Authority Santino Marella, revealing she had suffered a broken rib. It was also announced that Grace would receive her title opportunity at Rebellion. Furthermore, due to James also being unable to compete at Multiverse United, a Four Way Match between Deonna Purrazzo, Gisele Shaw, Masha Slamovich, and Miyu Yamashita was confirmed, with the winner being added to the Knockouts Championship bout at Rebellion. Purrazzo would emerge victorious at Multiverse United, advancing to Rebellion. However, on the April 13 episode of iMPACT!, James revealed she was not cleared to compete at Rebellion. As a result, the Knockouts Championship was vacated, and a singles match between Grace and Purrazzo for the title was confirmed for Rebellion.

At No Surrender on February 24, Steve Maclin won a Four Way Match, becoming the number one contender for the Impact World Championship. It was later announced that Maclin would face Impact World Champion Josh Alexander at Rebellion. However, shortly before Sacrifice on March 24, it was announced that Alexander had suffered a triceps tear and would relinquish his title. As a result, it was announced that at Rebellion, Maclin would face KUSHIDA, who was originally scheduled to challenge Alexander at Multiverse United, for the vacant championship.
