The AEW Women's World Championship is a Women's professional wrestling championship in All Elite Wrestling (AEW).
History[]
On January 1, 2019, the professional wrestling promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW) was founded. It was not until June, however, that AEW President and CEO Tony Khan announced future plans for both a women's championship and a women's tag team championship. It was then announced by AEW Chief Brand Officer Brandi Rhodes that the AEW Women's World Championship belt would be unveiled on August 31 at ALL OUT 2019, and that the inaugural champion would be crowned on October 2 during the inaugural broadcast of AEW's weekly television show, later revealed as Dynamite. Both participants for the inaugural championship match were determined at All Out. The first competitor was determined by the women's Casino Battle Royale during the Buy In pre-show, which was won by Nyla Rose. Later that night on the main show, Riho became her opponent by defeating Hikaru Shida. On the premiere episode of Dynamite, Riho defeated Rose to become the inaugural champion. At the Revolution event on March 6th, 2022, a new design for the title was revealed prior to then champion Britt Baker's defence against Thunder Rosa. This makes the championship the first in AEW to be completely redesigned, with the AEW TNT Championship having multiple stylistic changes while keeping the same belt design throughout its tenure.
On the August 24, 2022 episode of Dynamite, then champion Thunder Rosa announced that she had an injury and that an interim women's champion would be crowned until she could return. At All Out 2022, Toni Storm would defeat Britt Baker, Jamie Hayter and Hikaru Shida to become the interim women's champion. At Full Gear 2022, Jamie Hayter would defeat Storm to become the new interim champion following a 76 day reign. On the November 23, 2022 episode of Dynamite, Renee Paquette would announce that Tony Khan had asked Thunder Rosa to relinquish the title, making Hayter the official AEW Women's World Champion.
