Elimination Chamber 2023 was the 13th Elimination Chamber professional wrestling live event produced by WWE. It took place on February 18, 2023 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. It was held for wrestlers from the promotion's Raw and SmackDown brand divisions. The event aired on pay-per-view worldwide and was available to stream through Peacock in the United States and the WWE Network internationally.

Production

Background

Following the inaugural Elimination Chamber show in 2010, the event became an annual WWE pay-per-view. Typically held in February, the event has taken place each year since 2010, with the exception of 2016. Each event features its namesake Elimination Chamber match, a contest where six competitors are held in pods, entering the ring, which is surrounded by a cage, at timed intervals. An Elimination Chamber match is held for both the men and women's rosters, with a championship or championship opportunity on the line.

On October 24, 2022, WWE announced that the eleventh Elimination Chamber event would take place on February 18, 2023, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Tickets went on sale on November 18.

Storylines

On October 8, 2022, at Extreme Rules, Edge, a former member of The Judgment Day, was defeated by Finn Bálor after Rhea Ripley threatened to injure Edge's wife, Beth Phoenix, with a chair. However, despite Edge submitting, Ripley would attack Phoenix. At the Royal Rumble on January 28, 2023, Edge returned during the Men's Royal Rumble Match, eliminating Bálor and Damian Priest. However, while Edge attempted to eliminate Dominik Mysterio, Bálor and Priest assisted Mysterio in eliminating Edge. After, a brawl broke out between Edge and The Judgment Day before Phoenix returned to aid Edge. On the February 6 episode of Raw, Edge and Phoenix challenged Bálor and Ripley to a Mixed Tag Team Match at Elimination Chamber, which was accepted.

On January 29, 2022, at the Royal Rumble, Bobby Lashley defeated Brock Lesnar to win the WWE Championship after interference from Roman Reigns. Later that year at Crown Jewel, Lashley and Lesnar faced off again, with Lesnar emerging victorious. On the January 23, 2023 episode of Raw, Lesnar would return from an absence, costing Lashley his match against United States Champion Austin Theory. At the Royal Rumble on January 28, Lashley would eliminate Lesnar during the Men's Royal Rumble Match. On the February 6 episode of Raw, Lesnar would appear with a contract for a match between him and Lashley at Elimination Chamber. However, Lashley declared he would consider it, resulting in Lesnar giving Lashley two F-5s. The following week, a contract signing between Lesnar and Lashley took place, making a match between the pair official for Elimination Chamber.

On January 30, it was announced that United States Champion Austin Theory would defend his title in an Elimination Chamber Match at the namesake event. Later that night on Raw, Seth "Freakin" Rollins, Johnny Gargano, and Bronson Reed qualified for the match. The following week, Montez Ford and Damian Priest qualified, taking the final two spots.

Due to Women's Royal Rumble Match winner Rhea Ripley choosing to face SmackDown Women's Champion Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania, Adam Pearce announced on the January 30 episode of Raw that Raw Women's Champion Bianca Belair's WrestleMania challenger would be determined in an Elimination Chamber Match. Pearce then announced that the final four women eliminated from the Royal Rumble Match had already qualified, naming Asuka, Liv Morgan, Nikki Cross, and Raquel Rodriguez. The final two competitors were determined by Fatal Four Way Matches. On the February 3 episode of SmackDown, Natalya would qualify before Carmella qualified on the February 6 episode of Raw.

On January 28 at the Royal Rumble, Roman Reigns, leader of The Bloodline, defeated Kevin Owens to retain the WWE Championship and WWE Universal Championship. After the bout, Owens was attacked by Solo Sikoa and The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso). However, honorary Bloodline member Sami Zayn, who was formerly friends with Owens, looked on with distress. Paul Heyman would produce handcuffs, which were used to tie Owens to the ropes. Reigns would go to hit the helpless Owens with a steel chair, however, Zayn would intervene, pleading with Reigns. Reigns would then pass the chair to Zayn, instructing Zayn to hit Owens to show his loyalty to The Bloodline. Zayn would decide against this, hitting Reigns with the chair instead. This would result in Jimmy and Sikoa attacking Zayn. Jey, who had taken a liking to Zayn, was conflicted and decided to leave as The Bloodline continued their attack. On the February 3 episode of SmackDown, Zayn blindsided Reigns before challenging him to a match at Elimination Chamber. After Zayn was attacked by JImmy and Sikoa, Reigns accepted, making the match official.
