Battle of the Belts V was a professional wrestling television special produced by All Elite Wrestling (AEW). The event aired live from the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon on January 6, 2023 following Rampage. It was the fifth Battle of the Belts event.

Production[]

Background[]

All Elite Wrestling (AEW) held the inaugural Battle of the Belts event on January 8, 2022. A one hour television special, each Battle of the Belts event exclusively features championship matches. Battle of the Belts II and III were both taped on Friday following that week's episode of Rampage and aired on tape delay the following night. However, Battle of the Belts IV was aired live in order to avoid clashing with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) event Extreme Rules. With the announcement of Battle of the Belts V, it was revealed that it would air live on January 6, 2023, from the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon.

Storylines[]

On the January 4, 2023 episode of Dynamite, TBS Champion Jade Cargill teamed up with Red Velvet to defeat Kiera Hogan and Skye Blue. Later that night, it was announced that Cargill would defend the TBS Championship against Blue at Battle of the Belts V.

On the January 4, 2023 episode of Dynamite, The Acclaimed (Anthony Bowens and Max Caster) defended the AEW World Tag Team Championship against Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal. Bowens would be pinned, having his foot pushed off the rope by Sonjay Dutt. However, the decision was reversed after the referee was informed of Dutt's actions. The match continued, culminating with The Acclaimed retaining the title. It was revealed that night that The Acclaimed would face Jarrett and Lethal in a No Holds Barred rematch at Battle of the Belts V.

On the December 30, 2022 episode of Rampage, Orange Cassidy defended the All-Atlantic Championship against his friend, Trent Beretta. However, Kip Sabian, who was on commentary, planned to bring Cassidy and Beretta apart. Sabian's manager and wife, Penelope Ford, distracted Beretta, allowing Cassidy to win. In the next match on the show, Sabian scored a win over a local competitor with Orange Cassidy's finishing move, the Orange Punch. Later that night, it was announced that Cassidy would defend the All-Atlantic Championship against Sabian at Battle of the Belts V.
