
The AEW Grand Slam Tournament of Champions 2022 was a tournament that began on September 7, 2022 to crown a new AEW World Champion after the title was vacated following the suspension of CM Punk. The tournament featured participants who had previously been champions in All Elite Wrestling. The tournament concluded on the September 21 episode of Dynamite.
History[]
Following the All Out media scrum, newly crowned AEW World Champion CM Punk, along with his friend Ace Steel, engaged in a legitimate physical altercation with Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson). Punk, Omega, and the Jackson brothers were consequently suspended. On the September 7 episode of Dynamite, AEW President Tony Khan announced that the AEW World Championship, along with the AEW World Trios Championship, had been vacated. It was also announced that a tournament would take place to crown a new AEW World Champion.
