The 2022 NXT: The Great American Bash was the tenth Great American Bash professional wrestling event produced by WWE, and 24th Great American Bash event overall. It was held exclusively for wrestlers from the promotion's NXT brand division. The event aired as a special episode of WWE's weekly television series NXT, broadcast on the USA Network. It took place on July 5, 2022, at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.
Production[]
Background[]
The Great American Bash event originated in Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP) and the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), with the first edition taking place in 1985. After TBS purchased JCP, World Championship Wrestling (WCW) promoted The Great American Bash as an annual pay-per-view event. Following the purchase of WCW by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), then known as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), The Great American Bash was revived as a pay-per-view event, taking place annually from 2004 to 2009. WWE briefly revived The Great American Bash in 2012 for a special edition of SmackDown, before once again reviving the event in WWE's development brand, NXT. Since 2020, the event has been annually promoted by NXT, with the 2022 edition being announced during NXT In Your House, making it the tenth Great American Bash event under WWE and the twenty-fourth overall.
Storylines[]
The card consisted of matches that resulted from scripted storylines, where wrestlers portrayed villains, heroes, or less distinguishable characters in scripted events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches. Results were predetermined by WWE's writers on the NXT brand, while storylines were played out on NXT's weekly television program NXT 2.0 and the supplementary online streaming show Level Up.
Following her loss to Roxanne Perez in the final of the NXT Women's Breakout Tournament, Tiffany Stratton interrupted McKenzie Mitchell interviewing Wendy Choo, pleading to Mitchell that Perez had cheated. Choo would eventually get the attention of Stratton, before emptying the contents of her drink on Stratton. The following week, Choo continued to cause Stratton trouble, costing her a match against Fallon Henley after she threw confetti at Stratton. The victim of Wendy Choo's pranks, Stratton retaliated by insulting her on the June 21, 2022 episode of NXT, before Choo responded the next week, stating she would face Stratton at The Great American Bash.
On the June 21, 2022 episode of NXT, Wes Lee reminisced about his time with Nash Carter before explaining that during his matches with Sanga and Xyon Quinn, he was out to prove he could compete alone. However, Lee was interrupted by Trick Williams, who began mocking Lee before leaving. On the following week's episode of NXT, Lee explained he would defeat Williams, making the match official for The Great American Bash.
As tensions steadily grew between the members of Diamond Mine, Roderick Strong continued to berate The Creed Brothers (Brutus Creed & Julius Creed) behaviour as NXT Tag Team Champions, stating that The Creeds would blow their reign as champions if they continued giving title opportunities to other teams. On the June 14, 2022 episode of NXT, Julius Creed announced to Strong that he had arranged for him and fellow Diamond Mine member Damon Kemp to compete in a match to show The Creeds how to handle business. Despite Strong's protest that his leg was still injured, he and Kemp faced Cruz Del Toro and Joaquin Wilde the following week in a winning effort. The week after their win, Joe Gacy and his druids attempted to recruit Diamond Mine into the Dyad, however, Strong declined, leading to Gacy challenging Diamond Mine to a match. Gacy and his druids were able to defeat Strong and The Creeds due to continued bickering between Diamond Mine. Strong blamed The Creeds for the loss, promising that he and Kemp would teach them a lesson in an NXT Tag Team Championship Match at The Great American Bash.
Grayson Waller found himself looked upon favourably by the NXT North American Champion Carmelo Hayes after he assisted Hayes in holding off challenger Solo Sikoa by partnering with Hayes in a match against Sikoa and Apollo Crews before defeating Sikoa in one-on-one competition. As a result, Waller requested that Hayes sign some of his memorabilia on the June 28, 2022 episode of NXT. After Hayes agreed and signed the items, Waller revealed later in the show that Hayes had actually signed a contract that required Hayes to defend the NXT North American Championship against him, making a match between them official for The Great American Bash.
After defeating Tiffany Stratton to win the NXT Women's Breakout Tournament, Roxanne Perez celebrated with Cora Jade, but the pair were interrupted by Toxic Attraction. NXT Women's Champion Mandy Rose warned Perez not to use her newly won contract to face her, stating that if she did, she would fail to win the title. Perez clocked Rose before NXT Women's Tag Team Champions Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne assisted Rose in attacking Perez and Jade until Indi Hartwell made the save. The following week, Jade, Perez, and Hartwell defeated Toxic Attraction before Perez, who was once again intimidated by Rose, declared on the June 21, 2022 episode of NXT she wanted to partner with Jade to win the NXT Women's Tag Team Championship. However, Perez and Jade were interrupted by Katana Chance and Kayden Carter, who explained they were not finished with the Women's Tag Team Champions, leading to a brawl breaking out. The following week, Perez and Jade defeated Chance and Carter to make their Women's Tag Team Championship match official for The Great American Bash.
In the wake of losing the NXT North American Championship to Carmelo Hayes at NXT In Your House, Cameron Grimes confronted NXT Champion Bron Breakker on the June 14, 2022 episode of NXT. Grimes told Breakker that his father was unable to see him win the NXT North American Championship, while Breakker was able to have his father watch his championship victory. Grimes would then challenge Breakker to a match for the NXT Championship, a proposal which Breakker accepted to make the championship match official for The Great American Bash.
